Monthly Message

"Get on the Top"
By Amy M. Pooley

Through Thee will we Push down our enemies: Through Thy name will We tread them under that Rise up against us.
--Psalm 44:5

"Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them." Joshua 10:24,25

"Therefore, David ran, and stood upon the Philistine." I Sam. 17:51

" ... for the angel of the Lord ... rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it." Matthew 28:2

These verses speak to us of victory. Let's begin with Joshua.

Joshua called to the battle. He was a seasoned veteran of war. Joshua had been called upon to help fight a battle against five kings and their armies. We might ask, "What chance did he have to win against such a great host?" What did he have in contrast? For Joshua it wasn't a matter of "what" but "who". He had God.

If you would read the tenth chapter of Joshua you would discover that these kings were filled with fear because of the great and mighty things God had already accomplished through His servant Joshua. Fear tends to weaken- courage brings strength. It has been said that the devil trembles when he sees the weakest saint on his knees.

Joshua sets the battle in array. As Joshua does so, it is with a word from the Lord that he begins. "Joshua, fear them not ... there shall not a man stand before thee." With this assurance the battle was on. Many were slain by the hand of Joshua's men- many more were killed with hailstones cast down from heaven by the hand of God. Oh how He works in behalf of His children to give them victory. He even caused the sun to stand still on this particular occasion to give ample time for the battle.

Joshua loses the big ones. The five kings escaped in the midst of the battle. They found refuge in a cave They were found and brought out before Joshua. At this point Joshua commanded his soldiers to, "Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings." Stand upon the enemy don't let the enemy stand upon you.

David was not a seasoned veteran - but a young boy. He had heard the challenge of the giant which defied the living God. Defiance of Almighty God can never win. David somehow had learned this at an early age.

David challenges Goliath. Oh how Goliath sneered and scoffed as this mere lad approached him with a sling and five stones. Whatever could he do with such weapons? He was so young and inexperienced.

David is the victor. He approached the towering giant in the name of the Lord. This mere youth aimed his sling very carefully and the stone was guided to a vital spot. Goliath falls to the ground. David ran to the giant and stood upon him and slew him.
David was able to stand upon the enemy in spite of human odds.

It is recorded in the book of Mark that as the women neared the tomb resurrection morning they asked, "Who shall roll away the stone?" The stone had been placed over the door of the tomb to prevent anyone from stealing the body of Jesus. It was a problem to these women for it was big and heavy.

The surprise - As the women drew near they saw that the stone had been rolled away. The account, as we read it
in Matthew, reveals that, " ................... The angel of the Lord came and rolled back the stone ............... and sat upon it." What a position of victory. This spoke defeat to all those who believed not the message of the resurrection.

The enemy of our souls is represented by many big and weighty problems. He seems to be delighting in the construction of problems and pressures. However, because of the resurrection we can take the same position as a child of God.
Stand upon the enemy- don't let the enemy stand upon you. Be on the top where you belong as a child of God.

Jesus took our place that we might have His peace; He took our sin that we might have His salvation.

"The only man who has the right to say that he is justified by grace alone is the man who has left all to follow Christ." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer
