Chapter History

The Grace and Hope Mission has been ministering in Reading, PA for sixty-four years. The first twenty years its location was 1003 Franklin Street. The present location, 117 N. Ninth Street, has an attractive chapel and an annex building housing classrooms, kitchen and a dining area.

Services are held almost every day of the week.

Sunday School, 11:00 A.M.
Sunday Evening Service, 7:30 P.M.
Tuesday (Children's Bible Club) 4:00 P.M.
Tuesday (Adult Bible Class) 7:30 P.M.
Wednesday Bible Study & Prayer Meeting 7:30 P.M.
Thursday (Youth Bible Class) 6:30 P.M.
Saturday Praise Service 7:30 P.M.

The question is often asked, _What do you do?" Sometimes it is difficult to categorize our work. Each day has its own schedule.

There are outdoor services all year.

Indoor services, children's work and recreation are planned and implemented.
Counseling and visitation in hospitals and homes (providing temporarily help for those in need) sometimes calls for physical labor as well as food and clothing.
Keeping our chapel in good condition, painting and repairing, also becomes a part of our work. It is a full time work but a satisfying one.

Financed by free-will offerings we are constantly amazed at God's ways of caring for this ministry, which far surpasses our expectations or our abilities.

A door has been opened and no man can shut it. God has been pleased to allow us to continue these many years in this part of His vineyard, serving the public in His name.

We, as ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. have a mission to fulfill in this world. We do strive to do this with the Lord's help in various ways.

A lot of our time is spent in a couple of nursing facilities in our community. This is so needful and rewarding and inspiring. We are amazed as we spend time with the residents each week and began to realize their individual needs.

There is one dear lady who has been there for a number of years now and comes to our Saturday night program when she is able. When we first met her we wondered why she was there. Now we know why. Her disability has progressed to the point where she can do absolutely nothing for herself. She can't even wipe away her own tears.

She, however, is an inspiration to the rest of us. She still has a smile and an "OK" when you ask her how she is. We never have heard her complain in all these years we've been around her.

It makes me think of the verse in II Corinthians 12:9 where Jesus said to Paul on one occasion, "My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."

It is our prayer that we will be there for these folks as instruments in God's hands to show them God's love and care and assure them of His presence and peace and grace to deal with what could be distressing and depressing in their lives.

One of the songs the folks have requested to sing at another facility says, "Be not dismayed whate'er betide. God will take care of you." Hear it not only with your ears but with your heart.
